Sincerity is Better than ‘Nice’

Of course, I believe in being courteous and treating people with dignity.

However, some people believe just acting nicely is enough.

For example, I have encountered many people who are nice to someone’s face and then will turn around and gossip about that same person. I’ve had acquaintances who turned to me for support and compassion, seeming to be nice, only to ignore me when other people were around or otherwise forgot about me. I’ve been in relationships where my partner or relatives were nice to me, yet turned out to be deceiving and malicious.

It took me a long time to recognize what distinguishes a nice acting person from a person who I can actually count on to be truthful and genuine and potentially share a deep and trusting connection.

It is sincerity (and being genuine) that sets people apart from just being nice.

Many liars are really nice. No amount of niceness makes up for insincerity.

“Abandon all attempts at sincere communication when communicating with the terminally insincere.”
